Polaris's 3900 lemon cleaner

We upgraded from the Polaris 380 to the Polaris 3900--big mistake...First of all, it won't clean the shallow end of the pool. It constantly gets stuck on the drain at the bottom of the pool and when it climbs the wall, it will tip over on its side. It has been in the shop more than it's been in the pool over the last year. I really think Polaris just failed on this one. The 380 worked great--the only reason we upgraded was because it was getting old and in need of repairs. We are now considering upgrading to the 9300--I'm skeptical though...I'm afraid we will encounter some of the same issues.
Don't get this cleaner.

I decided to get a new cleaner to replace my 5-year-old 280. I was tired of replacing parts and I was hoping that progress had been made in climbing and cleaning ability. I was impressed by the looks of the 3900 Sport and the description of its steel mechanism. So I plunked down 899 bucks and took it home.

I was disappointed to realize that this cleaner requires more pressure to power it than the 280. I took apart the wall receptacle and removed the blue flow limiting device. Now the wheels spun at the appropriate speed. The cleaner did climb OK but not better than my old cleaner. The bag has two compartments that open/close with zipper. This is harder to clean than the old 280 design. The worst thing is a design flaw associated with the tail hose. The hose attaches to a plastic nozzle that rotates to control the amount of water pressure/tail movement. Unfortunately, the tail's sweeping movement repeatedly turned the flow off after a few minutes. Tail movements would basically stop until I reset the nozzle. This occurred over and over. This nozzle also seemed flimsy and I wonder how well it would hold up over time.

I returned the 3900 for a refund. I bought a few parts for my old 280. After restoring my old cleaner it worked like new and better overall than the 3900.

The 3900 looks good and I like the idea of the steel internals, but in the end this is NOT an improvement from the 280 and I would avoid the 3900.
Great new cleaner from Polaris

I was happy with my 380 when it worked the problem was that it just did not work often enough!! I recently broke down and retired my Polaris 380 and replaced it with the new Polaris 3900s. So far I have been very impressed. Installation was simple and it took 15 minutes to get everything set up. It climbs much better than my old 380 did and seems to do a much better job cleaning the pool. The main reason I purchased this was that I have been forced to rebuild my 380 once a year with all the plastic disposable parts that were used in its construction. The 3900s uses galvanized steel internals which should offer a substantial increase in reliability and essentially gives the residential pool owner access to a commercial grade cleaner. Searching online you can find these cleaners for substantially less than the MSRP and coupled with the trade in offers from Polaris it made it an easy decision for me.
Overpriced: it looks good but is not as good as a 380

Very disappointed in this pool cleaner: the drive wheel kept falling off and the zipper bag is very difficult and time consuming to clean: the zippers get fouled with debris. Many new features but poorly implemented: a big disappointment

I did give it one star for good looks: if it only worked as well

The cleaner did not seem to be able to climb as well as my old 380
I returned the 3900 and bought a new set of tires for my 380
